AASM introduces driver fatigue awareness program SAFE-D

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is working to increase awareness about driver fatigue as families hit the road for the summer peak driving season. According to a recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, an estimated 16.5 percent of all fatal crashes involved a fatigued driver. As a response to these alarming numbers, the AASM recently launched a new public education campaign called SAFE-D: Sleep, Alertness and Fatigue Education for Drivers. The centerpiece of the campaign is a free online presentation that describes the signs, causes and effects of driver fatigue and offers some strategies to manage it.

Louie Scalise, RPSGT


Louie Scalise, RPSGT, works as Clinical/Durable Medical Equipment Manager at Southeast Regional Sleep Disorders Center.  Since starting his career in Sleep Technology in 1999, Mr. Scalise has worked as a Night Technician and soon thereafter was promoted to a Scorer of sleep studies. After achieving his registry from the Board of Polysomnographic Technologist in 2003, he accepted the Clinical Manager position at Savannah Sleep Disorders Center.  After working in Savannah, in 2005 he accepted a position to develop the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Division of Southeast Regional Sleep.

Locally, he has worked closely with the community providing talks and interviews with local teachers, radio stations, and community centers to educate and answer questions about sleep medicine and technology.  He is currently the Program Directory for the A-Step Sleep Medicine and Technology Program accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine offered at Greenville Technical College.  He offers continuing educational courses and seminars approved for continuing education through the American Association of sleep Technologist and both north and South Carolina Respiratory Care Boards for Respiratory Therapy and Sleep Technologist in the community.

Nationally, he is currently serving as Chairperson of the Communication Committee and the Awards Committee for the American Association of Sleep Technologists.  Mr. Scalise is also recognized as a national speaker and educator to sleep technologists speaking at the 2008 annual SLEEP meeting in Baltimore, MD.  He also has instructed and developed courses for the Fundamentals of Sleep Technology Program in Houston, TX.  Mr. Scalise was also appointed by the Board of Directors of the American Association of Sleep Technologist to an Ad Hoc Committee to start developing and appointing speakers for a Webinar Series to be released in 2009 by the American Association of Sleep Technologists.
